As we recognize the start of National Military Appreciation Month in May, we feel honored to have recently hosted the National Defense Network at Walt Disney World Resort as it shined a spotlight on Disney’s nearly 100 years of strong support for the armed forces, military families and veterans.

The National Defense Network produces the only nationally syndicated, weekly radio program dedicated to active-duty military, veterans and their families. The Network is heard on 120+ stations in the U.S. each week and on the 400+ overseas broadcast outlets of Armed Forces Radio Networks. They also produce a weekly podcast, “Celebrity Salute,” and a daily one-minute feature, “60 Seconds of Service,” which airs on 300+ U.S. radio affiliates.

“I had no idea Disney had such a rich history supporting the troops and their families and it was a pleasure to learn more about this to share with our audience,” said Randy Miller, host of National Defense Network. “I enjoyed speaking with Disney leaders and cast members—many of whom are veterans themselves—and hearing their amazing stories.”

The show includes stories about how the company’s respect for servicemembers and veterans stems from our founders’ contributions during the First World War. Roy Disney was a Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy and Walt volunteered to be a part of the Red Cross Ambulance Corps in France. During Randy’s visit, he had the opportunity to have conversations with The Walt Disney Company CEO, Bob Chapek and Disney Parks Experiences and Products Chairman, Josh D’Amaro about a host of topics including Disney’s Heroes Work Here veteran hiring program. Other interviews include fun discussions on vacation planning tips for military families, a spotlight on the daily Flag Retreat Ceremony, Walt Disney World Resort’s 50th Anniversary celebration and more. You can hear the interviews from this special called “The Magic and the Military” at nationaldefensenetwork.com. Look for more interviews to become available in the future.

National Military Appreciation Month dates back to 1999 and was created to honor both active service members and veterans. Not only do we honor our nation’s fallen heroes on Memorial Day on May 30, but we also remember and honor the countless heroes who have served in uniform to protect and defend our freedoms throughout the month.

In the weeks ahead, we look forward to sharing more stories showcasing our incredible cast members who have strong connections with the U.S. Armed Forces. We also continue to offer a hearty salute to all military service members and their families currently serving around the world.
